Most advice you will find on this comes from a company that only lays one of them. We lay both, so this is a straight comparison rather than a pitch.
The short answer
Concrete generally suits smaller residential driveways where appearance matters and the budget allows for a higher upfront spend. Asphalt generally suits larger areas, sloped or irregular sites, and situations where getting a serviceable surface down quickly and economically is the priority.
Both perform well when the base underneath is built properly. Both fail early when it is not. That matters more than which surface you choose.
Cost
Typical 2026 Auckland rates:
- Asphalt, residential: $70 - $120 per square metre
- Asphalt, commercial or larger areas: $80 - $150 per square metre
- Plain concrete: $100 - $160 per square metre
- Decorative concrete finishes: $150 - $250 per square metre
Asphalt is usually cheaper per square metre, and the gap widens as the area grows because asphalt gets more efficient at scale. On a small driveway the difference is often modest once site preparation is included.
Lifespan
A well-built concrete driveway typically lasts 30 years or more in Auckland conditions. Asphalt typically gives 15 to 20 years before resurfacing is needed, though a resurface is considerably cheaper than a full replacement because the base stays in place.
Over a 40 year horizon the total cost tends to be closer than the upfront prices suggest.
Maintenance
Concrete needs very little. Occasional cleaning, and sealing if you want to keep a decorative finish looking sharp. Cracks can be repaired but the repair is usually visible.
Asphalt benefits from resealing every few years to protect the binder. It softens in high heat and can scuff under tight turning or a heavy load left in one spot. On the other hand, repairs blend in far better, and patching or resurfacing is straightforward.
Appearance
Concrete offers real choice: broom finish, exposed aggregate, colour, patterns. It suits properties where the driveway is part of the frontage.
Asphalt is black, and stays black. Clean and uniform, but there is one look.
Which suits your site
Asphalt tends to be the better fit for
- Larger areas, long driveways, shared accessways, car parks
- Sloped sites, as it contours more easily
- Sites where minimising downtime matters, as it can usually be driven on within a day
- Budgets where a lower upfront cost is the priority
Concrete tends to be the better fit for
- Smaller residential driveways where the finish is on show
- Heavy or concentrated loads
- Properties where a longer service life is worth a higher initial cost
- Sites where a specific colour or texture is wanted
What matters more than either
The base. Most driveway failures in Auckland are not surface failures, they are base failures showing through the surface.
If the subgrade is not compacted properly, if there is not enough basecourse, or if water is not being drained away from underneath, the driveway will fail regardless of what is on top. Concrete cracks and settles. Asphalt ruts and potholes. The cause is the same.
