Retaining Wall Contractor Auckland
Bromley Group builds retaining walls for residential and commercial sites across Auckland - timber, concrete block, and engineered poured concrete walls designed to hold, drain correctly, and stand long term. If your site has a level change that needs managing, we will assess it, price it, and build it properly.
Retaining Walls for Auckland's Terrain
Auckland's topography means retaining walls are one of the most common civil works on residential properties. Whether you are cutting into a slope for a building platform, levelling a garden, protecting a driveway from a bank, or replacing a failing wall on a steep section, the wall needs to be designed and built for the loads it is carrying and the ground it is sitting in.
We build walls that drain properly. A retaining wall without adequate drainage behind it will fail regardless of how well it is built. Every wall we construct includes correctly specified drainage aggregate and subsoil drainage to relieve hydrostatic pressure and protect the structure long term.
Types of Retaining Walls We Build
Timber Retaining Walls
Timber retaining walls suit residential applications up to 1.5m where a building consent is not required. We use treated H5 timber correctly sized for the height and loading. Clean finish, cost-effective, and built to last.
Concrete Block Retaining Walls
Concrete block retaining walls are suited to walls from 1m to 3m+ and provide a more permanent, structured finish. Besser block or segmental retaining block systems, depending on your site, aesthetic preference, and engineer's specification.
Poured Concrete Retaining Walls
Poured concrete retaining walls are used for engineered walls on challenging sites - steep slopes, high surcharge loads, or where the engineer has specified a structural solution. We work from the engineer's drawings and pour to specification.
Consents and Engineer Involvement
In Auckland, retaining walls over 1.5m in height generally require a building consent and an engineer's design. We work with your engineer or can recommend one. We are familiar with the Auckland Council consent process and can help you understand what is required before you commit to a scope.

Who We Work With
Who We Work With
On Retaining Walls
Homeowners
Retaining a bank, creating a flat garden area, or protecting a boundary - we build to the relevant New Zealand Standard and get your engineer's sign-off where height requires it.
Developers
Retaining walls on subdivisions and multi-unit sites need to meet precise specifications and tie into the drainage design. We handle both and provide full documentation.
Contractors
We work to your engineer's drawings and can coordinate concrete pours, block supply, and geotechnical inspections. Prequal'd for principal contractor work.

Common Questions
Frequently
Asked
In Auckland, a building consent is generally required for retaining walls over 1.5m in height, or any wall with a surcharge (e.g. a driveway or building above it). We advise on this at the quote stage.
It depends on height, soil type, drainage, and budget. Timber is cost-effective for lower walls. Concrete block is versatile and durable. Poured concrete suits taller or engineered walls. We'll recommend the right solution for your site.
Treated timber retaining walls are a cost-effective solution for residential applications. We specify the appropriate treatment grade based on ground contact conditions and consent requirements for each project.
Yes - always. Hydrostatic pressure behind a wall without drainage is the primary cause of failure. We install drainage cell and perforated pipe to a sump or outlet as standard.
Yes. Many retaining wall jobs are on sloped or tight sites. We carry machinery suited to restricted access and will assess site conditions before quoting.
